Tadić wins in Serbia, EU happy

The incumbent pro-Western President of Serbia, Boris Tadić, won re-election yesterday in an election where the main campaigning subject was the future of Kosovo. Mr Tadić won with a reported 50.5% of the vote, according to CNN International television, beating pro-Russia nationalist candidate Tomislav Nikolić.

This has of course pleased the European Union, which wants Mr Tadić’s government to have a faster track to EU membership. European Commission President José Manuel Barroso of Portugal, describing President Tadić’s re-election as “a victory for democracy in Serbia and for the European values we share”, has been quoted as saying “wish to accelerate Serbia’s progress towards the European Union.”

Still awaiting Moscow’s and Washington’s responses. The first few weeks of Mr Tadić’s new term will define the future of the Balkans, especially if Kosovo does declare independence as expected.
